The Complete Guide to Google Business Profile for Local Businesses

Your Google Business Profile is the single most powerful free tool for local visibility. Set it up right and you start appearing on Google Maps and in the "3-Pack" — the top 3 local results that get 44% of all clicks.

What Is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free listing that appears when someone searches for your business or a business like yours in your area. It shows your address, phone number, hours, photos, reviews, and a link to your website.

When someone searches "best bakery near me" or "plumber Fargo ND," Google shows a map with 3 local businesses. That's the Map Pack — and getting into it can be the single biggest thing you do for your business this year.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up Your Profile

1

Go to business.google.com

Search for your business name. If it already exists (Google sometimes creates listings automatically), claim it. If not, create a new one.

2

Complete every single field

Business name, category, address, service areas, phone number, website, hours, description. The more complete your profile, the higher you rank.

3

Verify your listing

Google will send a postcard to your address with a verification code. This usually takes 5–7 days. Don't skip this — unverified listings rank much lower.

4

Upload photos

At least 10 photos: logo, cover photo, interior, exterior, team, and product/service photos. Profiles with photos get 42% more direction requests.

5

Write a keyword-rich description

Include what you do, where you're located, and who you serve. "We are a family-owned bakery in Moorhead, MN serving the Fargo-Moorhead area..." — be specific.

6

Add your services or products

List every service you offer with descriptions and prices if applicable. This helps Google understand exactly what you do.

Reviews: The #1 Trust Signal

Google reviews are the most important factor in local search ranking after your profile completeness. Here's how to get more:

Ask every happy customer — in person, by text, or via email. Most people are happy to leave a review if you just ask.
Create a short link: go to your profile, click "Get more reviews" and share that link directly.
Respond to every review — good and bad. It shows Google (and potential customers) that you're engaged.
Never buy reviews. Google will detect them and your listing can be removed.

Keep Your Profile Active

Google rewards active profiles. Post updates at least once a month — new products, promotions, events, or just tips. Think of it like a social media post but for Google.

Also: keep your hours updated, especially for holidays. Businesses with accurate hours get significantly more calls and visits.
