How to Get Your Fargo Business Recommended by ChatGPT
This month a local business owner told me he had asked ChatGPT and Grok to recommend a web designer in Fargo. PixelPrairie came up in the top five. He is now a client, and I did not run a single ad. Here is what put us in that answer, and how you can do the same for your business, mostly for free.
Where ChatGPT gets its answers
ChatGPT does not keep a secret list of favorite businesses. When someone asks for a local recommendation, it goes and looks, the same way you would, and then sums up what it found.
Where it looks matters. In a BrightLocal study of 800 local searches, ChatGPT's search leaned mostly on Bing's index, and the source it cited most was the businesses' own websites. In July 2026 Yelp licensed its reviews and listings to OpenAI, so Yelp now feeds ChatGPT directly. Grok searches the web and X. Google's AI answers come from Google's own results, which is where your Business Profile lives.
So the real question is not how to trick an AI. It is this: when an AI goes looking for your kind of business in Fargo, what does it find about you?
What I did, step by step
Fill out your Google Business Profile completely
Every field: categories, service area, hours, services with prices, and real photos. Google’s AI answers pull from it, and so does everyone who searches your name. Free.
Ask every happy customer for a review
On Google first, then Yelp. A few honest reviews from real customers beat a profile with none. Never buy reviews or offer anything in exchange for one. Free.
Get on Bing, because ChatGPT leans on it
Add your business to Bing Places and verify your website in Bing Webmaster Tools. Most local businesses skip Bing completely, which is exactly why it is worth an hour. Free.
Get listed where AI looks
Yelp, plus the directories for your industry. For me that meant Clutch, a directory that already shows up when people search for Fargo web designers. Use the exact same name, address and phone number everywhere, so every source agrees. Free.
Put plain answers on your website
Your prices, what you do, where you work, and a short FAQ written the way people actually ask. If your site only says “call for a quote,” an AI has nothing to repeat. I also added structured data: a few lines of hidden code that tell search engines your name, hours and prices so they do not have to guess.
Tell search engines when something changes
Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console, and use IndexNow, a free way to tell Bing the moment a page is new or updated. Pages nobody points to can sit unnoticed for months. Free.
What nobody can promise you
Nobody controls what ChatGPT says. Its answers change from person to person and from day to day. Anyone who guarantees you the #1 spot in ChatGPT is guessing, and I will not promise it either.
I also cannot tell you which of the six steps did it. I did all of them. The listings started in July, and the first customer who found us through an AI answer came in October. What you can control is this: when an AI looks, everything it finds about you is complete, consistent and backed by real reviews.
Check what AI says about you in two minutes
If you are missing, or it gets your hours or services wrong, that is your to-do list. Start at step 1.
Questions people ask
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
There is no set timeline. For PixelPrairie it was about three months from the first listings to the first customer who found us through an AI answer. A business with years of reviews may get there faster.
Do I need a website to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not always. Listings on Google, Yelp and Bing can be enough to get named. But business websites were the most-cited source in BrightLocal’s study of ChatGPT local searches, so a clear website gives AI the most to work with.
Is this different from regular SEO?
The foundation is the same: complete listings, real reviews and a clear website. The difference is where AI looks. It leans more on Bing and on review sites like Yelp, which most local businesses never touch.
Can PixelPrairie do this for me?
